Idyllwild: A Journey of Surprises and Serenity
Idyllwild was a last-minute pivot for us, but it turned into the perfect start to our adventures. Originally, our plan was to head north to Yosemite first thing, but with the flooding happening in the valley and Highway 120 being closed, we decided to push the trip to later in the month. Looking around for a quick and easy start, we stumbled upon the Thousand Trails in Idyllwild. Using our Camping Pass, we could stay for four nights and then head to another Thousand Trails, so we quickly planned a route up north, hitting four Thousand Trails on the way to Thousand Trails Yosemite Lakes.
Nestled amidst the natural beauty of Idyllwild, Thousand Trails Campground awaited our arrival. While it proved to be an ideal starting point, our journey was not without its share of unexpected twists and delightful discoveries.
Thousand Trails Idyllwild welcomed us with open arms. The campground is the perfect blend of supported camping via hookups while still feeling surrounded by beauty. As we drove through the campsite, we couldn't help but notice that some areas needed maintenance. Most spots were not level and navigating through dips and valleys proved to be a minor challenge. I was also very glad we have our own bathroom, because the showers were not something I’d be willing to step into. A couple of the annual residents mentioned that after an ownership change, maintenance has gone downhill. Nevertheless, the undeniable allure of the campground compensated for these minor inconveniences.
The true essence of our Idyllwild adventure lay in exploring the trails that wound through the campground. With each step, we were transported to a world of tranquility and wonder. Towering trees whispered secrets of ancient wisdom as the wind blew through their branches and birds serenaded us from above. The scenic beauty captivated our senses, providing ample opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, and quiet contemplation. After spending six months surrounded by the gloom of marine layers in San Diego, seeing the sun dappling through the trees was a welcome change.
Despite the June Gloom of San Diego leading to colder temperatures than normal, we still expected a change in climate when we arrived in Idyllwild. However, we were unprepared for the dramatic drop in temperatures. Our cozy camping gear quickly became our closest ally as the crisp mountain air dipped to the low 30s during the mornings and evenings. The chill in the air served as a reminder that nature holds its own rhythm, and we adapted to the ever-changing conditions enthusiastically.
Beyond the campground, Idyllwild greeted us with its idyllic (get it? IDYLL-wild?) charm and welcoming ambiance. The town's picturesque streets were adorned with quaint shops, inviting us to explore their treasures. We meandered through the stores, admiring handmade crafts, unique trinkets, and local artwork. We, of course, couldn’t pass up the Rock Shoppe, which delighted Naomi with tons of colorful gems and minerals. Idyllwild's vibrant culinary scene beckoned us to savor its flavors, and we enjoyed delicious meals at a few local restaurants, delighting in the town's diverse culinary offerings. We highly recommend the Brewpub, which brews its own beers and has delicious food. We found it on our second-to-last day and loved it so much that we went back on our last day.
Amidst the excitement of setting up camp and exploring Idyllwild, we recognized the need to restore our inner balance. Moving from an apartment to a trailer had brought its fair share of stress, and we yearned for a moment of tranquility. Our search led us to Om Sweet Aum Yoga Studio, where an hour of yoga provided solace and rejuvenation. We stretched our bodies, cleared our minds, and rediscovered our center, preparing us for the next leg of our journey.
Our first campground adventure in Idyllwild was a remarkable experience, brimming with unexpected surprises and serene moments. Despite the minor imperfections in the campground's maintenance, Thousand Trails Idyllwild provided a beautiful backdrop for our journey. The town itself exuded charm, enticing us with its delightful shops and mouthwatering cuisine. Finding solace at Om Sweet Aum Yoga Studio offered the perfect respite from the whirlwind of transitioning to trailer living, and following it up with the Brewpub’s crisp and fresh beer was the perfect relaxing end. As we bid farewell to Idyllwild, our hearts were filled with gratitude for the memories and anticipation for the adventures that awaited us on the open road. Adventure Awaits!
